Come and meet some of the scientists who travel to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean aboard the Umitaka Maru. In the relaxed environment of the Hobart Brewing Company, hear their stories and learn about their research. Enjoy a beer and celebrate scientific collaboration between Australia and Japan.
We are delighted to welcome four scientists as part of this special event:
Dr Masato Moteki (Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)
Overview of our research in the Southern Ocean by the training vessel Umitaka Maru and a quick review of this voyage
Dr Aiko Tachibana (Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)
Application of eDNA for Southern Ocean ecosystem study
Dr Graham Hosie (Australian Antarctic Division)
Australia-Japan collaboration in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean
Dr Ryosuke Makabe (National Institute of Polar Research)
The study of biogeochemical cycling in the Southern Ocean by a series of mooring systems
The evening will consist of an open mixer from 5 to 5.30pm, giving everyone the chance to buy a drink and mingle with the scientists. This will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session from 5.30 to 6.30pm.
This is a free event. No RSVP is required. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. A food truck will also be serving meals.
This event will be followed immediately by a Beer Aquatic session organised by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre:
