We are delighted to present the Tasmanian premiere of the Japanese film "Impossible to Imagine". The screening will be followed by a virtual Q&A session with the writer and director, Felicity Tillack. (Because of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney, we regret that the composer of the soundtrack, Hanako Ward, will no longer be able to join us.)

The film tells the story of a traditional Kyoto woman who runs a failing kimono business and the biracial entrepreneur who comes to help keep it solvent. Along the way they fall in love but his need for change clashes with her desire for the world to stay the same. In the end, can they change enough for the other?

Impossible to Imagine is a romantic film, shot within the beautiful city of Kyoto. While providing social commentary on Japan, it also explores universal themes of identity, love and acceptance. A child of two cultures, Hayato struggles to find his place anywhere, which often results in frustration. Ami however, strong in her sense of self, holds tightly onto what she loves: her business, her family, and the past. The film asks, what does it mean to be Japanese? Will, in the face of rapid ageing, and depopulation, Japan accept those who don't fit the traditional definition of what it means to be Japanese?

The official trailer can be viewed on YouTube (both English and Japanese subtitles are available).

Tickets are $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Soft drinks and light refreshments are included.

This special event will take place at Wide Angle Tasmania in South Hobart. Ample on-street parking is available. Please be advised that the main entrance involves stairs. However, alternative access is possible via a side entrance upon request.
