Obon lantern making with Yumemi Hiraki
Yumemi Hiraki is a locally based contemporary artist from Hiroshima, Japan.
August is a special time for Japanese people as they celebrate Obon, a Buddhist cultural tradition where ancestors are commemorated and lanterns are displayed as guides for their spirits to find their way home to their families.
Yumemi will be running some free lantern making workshops at the Long Gallery during Winter Light. This is a great opportunity to connect with your ancestors and celebrate the special memories you have of them. We would like you to bring a photo of a special person who has passed and who you’d like to honour. If you’d like to share, we will be recording stories of participants ancestors which will then become part of a multi-sensory installation which will presented at Salamanca Arts Centre as part of the Winter Light celebrations.
These free workshops will run:
Saturday 31 July (1-3pm)
