The Australia-Japan Society of Tasmania would like to invite members and friends to join us for dinner and a talk with Dr Emerald L King.
In the sweltering heat of a Nagoyan summer, representatives from 36 countries came together on the Red Carpet to mark the start of the World Cosplay Summit for 2024. The group gathered with local cosplayers, industry professionals and government officials and stood ready to parade through the centre of the Oasis 21 entertainment precinct in front of the Aichi Prefecture Arts Centre. Emerald L King, one half of the 2024 team Australia was one of these cosplayers - for the Red Carpet event she dressed as a space priest from CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth in 7 layers of linen and pleather robes in 38 degree heat. Join Emerald as she talks about the history of Australia on the World Cosplay stage and about her own experiences as a cosplayer and cosplay scholar.
Dr Emerald L King is Lecturer in Humanities at the University of Tasmania. She studied in Japan and Australia before receiving her PhD in Japanese literature in 2012. She has taught and lectured on Japanese language, literature, and popular culture throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong and the UK. Her research is divided between Japanese women's writing, cosplay as fan translation, and shōjo (girls) manga and culture.
A comprehensive selection of food and drink will be available. No pre-payment is required: everyone can simply order from the menu and pay on the day.
Our 2024 Annual General Meeting will also be taking place from 7.30pm, immediately following this event. You can register separately for the AGM here.
