In this joint event with the Australian Institute of International Affairs Tasmania, Professor Akiho Shibata from Kobe University will unravel the ups and downs of Japan-Australia collaboration in Antarctica. The talk will also cover the 70-year history of Japan's involvement in the governance of Antarctica through the Antarctic Treaty System.
Professor Shibata is professor of international law and Director of the Polar Cooperation Research Centre at Kobe University. He has written extensively on the Antarctic Treaty System, Arctic international law, international environmental law and international law-making processes. He has also attended several Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings as a member of the Japanese delegations and became the first legal scholar to join a Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in 2016-17.
Complementary refreshments will be served from 5.30pm, prior to the beginning of the talk at 6pm.
