The novel Swallow is based on the true story of a Tasmanian convict and his encounter with samurai from Japan's Awa Domain.
Following a mutiny at Recherche Bay in August 1829, William Swallow took command of the brig Cyprus. Along with his fellow convicts he then embarked on a remarkable adventure across the Pacific Ocean, with the Cyprus becoming the first recorded visit by an Australian ship to Japan.
In this joint event with the University of Tasmania, author Alexandria Burnham will discuss the story behind the novel. Offering insights into the process of writing historical fiction, she will also read from the archival documents that informed the novel’s development. This will be followed by a Q&A session.
Participants are encouraged to dress in their finest pirate or nautical dress. The best costume, as chosen by the author herself, will receive a free copy of the novel. Copies of Swallow will also be available for purchase and signing.
Tickets include a catered lunch and cost just $15 for University of Tasmania students, $17.50 for members and $20 for non-members. We will do our best to ensure that a range of dietary preferences are accommodated.
This event will take place in the new University of Tasmania Forest building in the Hobart CBD. Instructions on how to access the venue will be emailed to participants.
